Retrofit Foam for Existing Homes
One of the drawbacks to traditional spray foam insulation is that it can't be installed in a cavity that is closed on both sides, such as the walls of an existing home. If spray foam was injected into a closed wall cavity it would expand and cure almost immediately before it could fill the entire cavity. For this reason, FoamLok Retrofit foam was developed. The product is identical to our open cell spray foam, except that the expansion reaction is slowed down. When injected into a wall cavity it falls in its liquid form to the bottom of the cavity before it starts its expansion.
Installation
Retrofit injectable foam can be installed in wall cavities with little to no existing insulation. If the cavity has cellulose or other cavity fill insulation already installed, then this product cannot be used. If older thin fiberglass batts are in the cavity, we can typically install Retrofit foam. Homes built after 1970 are usually not able to use this product as the fiberglass batts in the walls are too thick for proper install.
FoamLok Retrofit foam can be installed from inside or outside the home. A 1/4'' diameter hole is drilled for the injection process. Two holes per cavity are needed for an empty wall. Three holes are typically needed for walls with older insulation in them. We use an infrared camera DURING installation to ensure complete coverage. As the product cures it heats to over 200 degrees, allowing us to easily see our coverage through the infrared camera.
The product is fully cured within minutes. Our crew closes your walls back up according to your needs. The foam in the wall will never shrink settle or sag. Unlike other injectable shaving cream consistency foams, our Retrofit foam completely and permanently bonds to the studs leaving you with a complete air barrier with a high R value.
